How to use domain account authentication in our SFTP and FTP server

How to use domain account authentication in our SFTP and FTP server

In version v2025.6.8.0 we added the possibility to use domain users as authentication method.

Select Server menu item > SFTP Server

limagito file mover sftp server option

There are a couple of ways to use this new ‘Domain User’ option. The examples below are related to SFTP but the same counts for FTP(S).

    1. First example:

    • Domain User is enabled
    • Username is set to “administrator”
    • Domain Name is set to “limagito”

When a SFTP client connects to our SFTP server with the user “administrator” we will request the domain “limagito” to check if the provided password from the SFTP  client is correct.

    2. Second example:

    • Domain User is enabled
    • Username is set to “limagito\administrator”.
      • The Username is prefixed by the domain.
      • You need to use the sAMAccountName
    • Domain Name is left blanc

When a SFTP client connects to our SFTP server with the user “limagito\administrator” we will request the domain “limagito” to check if the provided password from the SFTP  client is correct.

    3. Third example:

    • Domain User is enabled
    • Username is set to “localhost\administrator”.
      • The Username is prefixed by the domain.
      • You need to use the sAMAccountName
    • Domain Name is left blanc

When a SFTP client connects to our SFTP server with the user “localhost\administrator” we will request the localhost user accounts to check if the provided password from the SFTP  client is correct.

In this version we also added a LDAP(S) client option. In the first two account examples we used the “limagito” domain. Our domain LDAPS server is listening on IP 192.168.2.202 – Port 636.

    • Check ‘Enable LDAP Client(s)’
    • Add the Client(s) you need
      • You can add multiple domains
    • For each domain you add, you need to add:
      • LDAP Host, our LDAP test server is using the IP 192.168.2.202
      • LDAP Port, our LDAP test server is listening on Port 636
      • LDAP Use TLS
        • When enabled TLS will be used to encrypt the LDAP packets

Removing old rules that are no longer in use

Q: A number of the rules are disabled. We will work on removing old rules that are no longer in use and get the number closer to 400. Is there a way to sort or filter by enabled/disabled rules?

A: In Limagito File Mover version v2025.6.30 we added the following options:

    • Hide Enabled Rules
      • Will remove all Enabled Rules from the Rule Treeview
    • Hide Disabled Rules
      • Will remove all Disabled Rules from the Rule Treeview

With the Refresh Rules you can go back to the original state.

Limagito File Mover practical rule limit

Q: Practical rule limit question. We are working with a limagito server that is hosting 600+ rules. We have it running via a service and note that shutting down the service we get an error that it is having problems shutting down. Also start up takes 5-10 minutes on restart of service or reboot of system. Is there a practical limit to a server? Is there a way to tell where it is in the start up process or to delay rules from running until the service is up and running (assumption is that it is running rules as the service turns on and causing a lag?)

    A: Please check: Q&A-need-more-details-on-limagitox-file-mover-application/

    2. How many interfaces/rules can be created in Limagito? is there any limitation? How many threads/Rules can be executed in parallel/Simultanious?

Our advice is to use a maximum of 400 rules per instance of our File Mover. If you need more, please install a second instance of our file mover.

You can check the LimagitoXS.log file under C:\ProgramData\LimagitoX\Log, it will show you the status during start and stop. Maybe you can find out which Rule(s) are causing the delay.

However, it would be a good idea to lower the amount of Rules for this instance to 400 by installing a second instance on the same server of a using a second (virtual) server.

FYI: We did a test here:

    • Startup of LimagitoX File Mover installed as a Service  running 200 Rules takes +/- 25 seconds.
